For Monday

Cross Grade exam day is Thursday. Make sure that you have your study sheets ready to go. Review the booklet we handed out in class. Practice with other quotes in the booklet or quotes that you have found online. Remember that you don't have to get the quote right. You are working with the idea that is presented and you are using it as a springboard. Be sure to look at the comments on your previous essays and make sure that you pay attention to addressing those issues on writing day.

English 10
Finish your Mockingbird assignments. Think about presentation. Does your assignment need a title page? Have you typed it? Is it presented well? There is no right way to present your project, but there might be a better way.

Have you looked at the criteria on the sheet and made sure that you have addressed them all?

Remember to get your study sheet ready for class. We will be working on Cross Grades on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Friday we will be doing poetry.

English 11
Prepare notes for Lord of the Flies. You can consider quotes that might work in an essay and include them in your notes. Make sure that you have thought about theme statements that apply to this novel. Think carefully about characterization etc.

You may refer to a personal novel on the cross grade.


English 12
On Friday we worked on the first body paragraph of our essay. We revised our introductions and we tried to make sure that we were using transition words correctly.

Make sure that you vary how you use transitions and that you develop your points sufficiently before building a connection to something else.

For Friday

English 10
Bring your project to class if you want me to give you feedback on it. I will spend about 30 minutes talking to students. I will go over the introductions tomorrow in class.

English 12
Continue to practice essay writing. Make a list of questions or concerns that you may have regarding the exam.

English 11
Essay exam on short stories. The exam will follow the cross grade format.You can come a little early to class if you like. You will have to write about 2 stories. You cannot use Lord of the Flies. You can use your notes and your books.

For Thursday

English 10
Finish the introductory paragraph of your essay. Make sure that your thesis is complete and is direct. We will spend time going over them in class tomorrow and will practice with another topic.

English 11
Finish your thesis statements. Make sure your study sheet is up to date.
Essay test on Friday.

English 12
Opening paragraph of essay. Refer to the sheet on thesis statements to help you. Try to refer to all the stories in your thesis.

1. It makes a definite and limited assertion that needs to be explained and supported by further discussion:

   intriguing	The success of the last scene in Midsummer Night's Dream comes from subtle linguistic and theatrical references to Elizabeth's position as queen.

2. It shows the emphasis and indicates the methodology of your argument:

   emotional, vague	This essay will show that the North American Free Trade agreement was a disaster for the Canadian furniture industry.
   worth attention	Neither neo-protectionism nor post-industrial theory explains the steep reversal of fortune for the Canadian furniture industry in the period 1988-1994. Data on productivity, profits, and employment, however, can be closely correlated with provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement that took effect in the same period.

3. It shows awareness of difficulties and disagreements:

   sweeping, vague	Having an official policy on euthanasia just causes problems, as the Dutch example shows.
   suitably complex	Dutch laws on euthanasia have been rightly praised for their attention to the principles of self-determination. Recent cases, however, show that they have not been able to deal adequately with issues involving technological intervention of unconscious patients. Hamarckian strategies can solve at least the question of assignation of rights.
