Our last Monday
Keep up with your bookclub journals. Remember to include your vocabulary words. Five for each section
Your final journal should be about what you have learned from this book and it should be highly reflective. Try to think about the implications of what you have read. For example, can you think of examples of man's inhumanity to man that exist today? How are they the same or different from what happened in the first or second world wars?  If you read My Sister's Keeper, reflect on the longterm implications of organ donation. When are we going too far to save a life? When should we stop?

Finish the irony sheet (questions 1 and 3)

Begin an outline for an essay on irony in The Crucible. Be sure to have a topic sentence and a thesis statement. We will continue with this tomorrow.

Lit terms to repetition on Wednesday and the final quiz on Friday.

There is a final 40 question test on Thursday, August 9th.

Friday, Friday, Friday

Okay, one more weekend to go and then we are done, done, done!
This weekend:
Choose one of the essay topics from the booklet that I handed out on the first or second day of class. Choose a theme and write a narrative. Practice using dialogue if you can. I want you to try writing a story even if that is not what you decide to do on the government exam day.
Book club meeting on Monday. Have your journal done and make sure that you are reflecting on your reading; not just retelling the plotline.
It is your thinking that counts to me. Final journal is due on Friday
There is a lit terms quiz on Monday. The terms go to passive voice.
You can finish the essay that we did in the computer room if you took a copy home. You can also go to the government website and read the questions there.

Write one line using hyperbole/refer to relationships.

Tonight:
Be ready for bookclub. You will discussion your reading in your group. Journal 11/2 to 2 pages double spaced.
Read "No One's a Mystery" for tomorrow/Wednesday
Vocab quiz on Catcher tomorrow after the computer lab.
Write 3 "I am" metaphors
Fill in the Crucible sheet/what have you learned? We will begin the play tomorrow.

Third Friday

It is all downhill from today. You will make it. Remember that if you think that you can't make it, you must withdraw next week or there will be a mark on your report card.
Otherwise, you will get a "W".

Read: your independent novel. Book club on Tuesday and Thursday this week and a journal is due each time we have a meeting. Snacks! 5 vocab words and 5 sentences too.

Read Miss Brill, do the worksheet and write a character description. Like you did for Holden, describe Miss Brill. Use evidence from the story to support your point of view.

Lit terms test on Wednesday/ up to idiom this time.

Vocabulary from Catcher will be on Tuesday. Fill in the blanks with the correct word from the list.

We will be starting the play on Monday.

We are near the end of the third week. Wow!
Essay test tomorrow during the first half of the class.
I am collecting:
Essay on Phoebe and Jane with corrections/rubric should be included.
Reflect on the changes that you have made to your original.

Outline of the essay/typed or handwritten
Include the original and write about the changes that you have made here as well.

Tomorrow we will be reading a short story and we will be doing a work on it after the break. You will also have time to be with your Book Club mates so that you can decide how you will divide up your journals.

5 journal entries 1 1/2 to 2 pages of writing due in 2 weeks.

Finish the outline of the essay. Remember that your outline is due on Friday. It should be easy for me to read. You must also hand in your Jane and Phoebe essay.
There will be 10 marks for the outline and the essay.

There will be a lit terms test on Monday. There will be a Catcher vocab test on Tuesday. Fill in the blanks with the correct word.
eg. The smell of the ____________sardines made me fill ill.

Write a paragraph tonight about the role that Allie plays in Holden's life.

It's Friday, Friday!!!

End of week 2. Four more weeks to go, people. Good work on the essays. Most of you got them together and organized. Let's see how well we can do with the next one.
For Monday:
quiz: citr: chapters 16-18 (Try to finish the novel. We will be finished next week. There will be an essay exam on the novel)
Lit terms on Tuesday up to fable.

Write a multi-paragraph essay on the following topic:
Discuss the role(s) that Phoebe and Jane play in Holden's life.
You must have a strong debatable thesis statement. We will edit the essays in class on Monday. I will read them and give you feedback. You will outline one more before the final essay test.

We will be doing another independent reading novel in lit circles and we will be starting a play after Catcher in the Rye. We will be doing poetry as well.

Today:
We worked on our revisions to the essay. Please type the final version and double space it. If you don't have computer access, you can handwrite it in blue or black ink. This should also be double spaced. Please have your papers organized for class tomorrow. I don't want to spend time in class with you looking for your papers. Who will be the student who doesn't have it organized?
 Your good copy will go on the top of the group of papers. You only need to attach 2 rubrics; I only handed out 2 of them.

Do an outline for the Phoebe/Jane writing assignment. You should try to have a  strong thesis statement.

You will be writing an essay draft for the weekend. We will do some of the writing in class on Friday.

Only 2 more days to go to a sunny weekend! Today we talked about subject and object pronouns.
We did a sheet with questions on them. Do the Applications section of that sheet and write 5 sentences of your own.
Take one of the three paragraph essays we have done this week and revise it. Bring it back to class tomorrow for editing. Check carefully that you have a strong opening and an appropriate conclusion. Do not overuse the same transition words. Put page numbers in brackets like this: (42). Check to make sure that you do not have run-on sentences or sentence fragments. Verify the use of the semicolon and check that you have used it correctly. If you use reflexive pronouns, don't overuse them in your paragraph. They are meant to add emphasis.
The final typed copy will be due on Friday. You must attach all 3 drafts together along with your rubrics, or I will not mark them.
There is a quiz on Chapters 10-12. This involves more writing. Review what you know about the females in this section of the novel.
Lit terms quiz to editorial on Friday. Chapters 13-15 on Friday.

Okay...
Today we talked about Holden. We learn about him through others and through what he says about others and what they do. Write a paragraph and describe Holden. Use 2-3 quotations to support your answer. You can use quotations from the page we did in class. Try to use a semicolon, a colon (if possible) and a reflexive pronoun.

Monday Week Two

Today we discussed Ackley and Stradlater. Write a paragraph discussing Ackley and Stradlater and how they are foils for Holden. Cite specific examples. You must use one quotation from the novel. Be sure to have a strong topic sentence and concluding sentence. Use must use an adjective clause in your writing. Underline it.
We will correct and edit in class tomorrow.
There is a quiz on Chapters 4-6 tomorrow
Lit terms quiz on Wednesday
Vocabulary: Choose 8 words from the list (chapters 4-6) and write a sentence using the word. We will go over them in class tomorrow.
There will be a vocab test when we are half way through the book. Keep up with the words.
Try not to stress about the quiz today. I told you it was tough. It won't make too much difference to your final grade.

End of week one

This weekend:
Read ahead. Read up to chapter 6 for Monday. Up to chapter 9 for Tuesday. Follow the vocabulary sheet as a guide for the number of chapters to read.

Quiz Monday on chapters 1-3/make sure that you know the characters and the places in the first 3 chapters.
Lit terms quiz up characterization on Monday as well. This will be in the first half of the class.
Do the worksheet on semicolons
Do the worksheet with the quotations/diction and syntax.
Choose another quotation from the first 3 chapters. Discuss the quotation in a paragraph. Use the questions on the worksheet to help you write the paragraph.
Be sure to have:
A strong topic sentence
A clear thesis
Use semi-colon or colon
A strong concluding sentence
We are practicing our writing. It will be fine.

Day Three of Summer School

One more day to go and you have made it through one week. Good for you folks!
For tomorrow:
Good copy of your I am from poem. Typed. Attach your rough draft. Make a note of what you have changed and why.
Tomorrow I will collect your persuasive paragraph. Don't worry about making it perfect. I am just going to read it and give you feedback.
Read chapters 1-2 in Catcher in the Rye. You can always refer to Sparksnotes or Schmoop to help you if you don't understand.

Be prepared to take a stand on one side or the other/do you think that the barber made the right decision? What are the ramifications of his choice?
