Found poem
Ashes for the Wind/rough draft is due on Monday
To create a Found Poem:
* Decide what focus you want for the poem. Ask yourself what message you want the reader to have from your poem.
* Select words and phrases from the story (the ones that you underlined for homework) that relate to your focus and write them down on a piece of paper.
* Combine the words and phrases you have written into poetic form (lines and stanzas).
* Reduce these lines, if necessary, to create a more concise and focused poem.
* You cannot add words to your poem that are not in the original story, but you may remove words and change the original context of the words to create your poem.
* You may repeat key words and phrases for emphasis.

We will share our writing journals from the story Test tomorrow in class. I am not collecting this, but I will check it to make sure that it is done.
Tonight look up corrupt governments in South America. Print off the information and highlight what you have learned.
Today we had trouble with mood. Try to recall what it means. What is the difference between mood and tone?
Review how to write a theme. What is the theme of "Test"?

Look over the questions for TEST. We will discuss on Monday.
Write a paragraph in which you compare the movie, "Harrison Bergeron" to the short story. Which one do you believe was better?
You should have made a list of similarities and differences. Your paragraph:
1. Theme statement
2. Thesis statement (what is your point of view) Here you may use "I" because it is a personal reflection
3. 3 Points/evidence/explanation or elaboration
4. Conclusion
Make sure that your paragraph is well developed.
If you missed the movie, you can watch it on Monday at lunch or on Tuesday.

Tonight: read the story "The Test" We will discuss it tomorrow.

Theme of a story: central message of a story. The author's purpose for writing.
Theme statement: a general statement about life. We often use theme statements to start our Cross-grade essays.
Thesis statement: opinion, direction of an essay

For tonight: write a journal about your worst test.
Tomorrow we will be working on our improvs for about 15 mins and then we will be presenting them.
Think about plans for your group tonight.
Theme is the underlying message of the story. It should be a complete thought and it is not necessarily a moral. A moral is the lesson learned from a story. Morals are found in fables and often in children's stories.
Tomorrow we are going to talk about using theme statements to start our essays.
