Silent reading. Bring books.
Your 3rd journal is to be done for next Monday.
Write the introduction for the compare/contrast essay on Miss Brill and Kugelmass. Remember to provide the reader with a clear defintion of a sympathetic character.
Outline the 1st body paragraph of the essay.

Thesis statement
Discussion of both stories
Conclusion: transition to the next paragraph

Topic Sentence
Block style: refer to one story only
Thematic style: refer to both stories; build the connection with one story and compare it with the other.

Review the definition of a sympathetic character: Check this link:
Sympathetic character
Make revisions to your paragraph on Kugelmass. Think about who is the more sympathetic character and why.
Create a venn diagram or chart to help you organize your thoughts. Write a definition at the top.
Write your thesis statement.
Bring your second journal about your novel to class. Make sure that you are making connections to other things while writing.

Creative Writing
Draft of your story that uses dialogue to provide the essence of your character for the reader.
It should be clear. Show don't tell.

Look at the sheets that I handed out on Friday about the Memoir assignment. Come with an idea for Monday. Look at the timeline. We will be planning our time for the project. Due date: March 15, 2013

Creative Writing
Bring your first journal to class. It doesn't have to be completely done, but you need to have written enough so that we can see if you are on the right track.
Outline/draft a story with your character. We need to understand the essence of your character through your use of plot and dialogue.

If you haven't finished your box assignment, you need to get it done. We are working on dialogue writing tomorrow in class. Think about your character and his/her essence and what kind of situation you might put him/her in.

Finish reading The Kugelmass Episode. Make a list of character traits and how you know (references from the story)
Think while you are reading whether or not Kugelmass is a sympathetic character.

Think about and note points about your character. Someone who played a role in your life. Why was it important etc.

Creative Writing
Boxes are due for Tuesday. You must do a write up that explains your choices and your connections. It can be done in point form.
Take the first line of your friend's story. Write the story in your journal. Use it as a springboard for an idea.

English 12
Reading of Miss Brill. Make notes on the page about characterization. Make a list of all that you know about her. Highlight the page and then make a list in your notebook. Provide quotations to support your ideas.
Bring your reading journal to class. I will read them in class and give feedback when you are working in groups. You should have it typed.

Type your next version of your persuasive paragraph. Make changes to your paragraph based on the feedback that you got today.
Bring your journal to class for reading on Monday. I will read your journals during class and give you feedback then.
Tuesday is the next lit terms quiz to denotation.
Silent Reading is on Tuesday as well.
We will be finishing our love poems in class tomorrow. There will be time to practice, present and give feedback in class.

Your first blog entry should be about My Left Foot. Don't give a plot summary. Reflect on the style of the first chapter. Write about what you liked and didn't like.
Bring your boxes or other objects to class tomorrow. Presentation of boxes is on Tuesday

Creative Writing
Today: Write a first line for a story that would be about the beginning of your life. How could you hook your reader? Think about the style you want to use: are you trying to be more factual or more emotional?

Tomorrow we are going to the library to start our blogs. You will need a gmail account. Have a look at Blogger tonight so that you will be ready to start.

Friday is a double block. Bring your first sentence to class. Write a reflection in your journal about the opening chapter of My Left Foot.  What were the strengths and weaknesses of the chapter? What did you like or dislike and why?

Today we were writing a persuasive paragraph about "Just Lather that's All". You need to have a draft done for tomorrow. Use the handouts to help you plan your writing.  You need a general topic sentence and a specific thesis statement. Remember that your thesis needs to be debatable. Don't try to prove a statement. Be sure to ask yourself if you are answering the question in your paragraph. Are you providing enough evidence to support your opinion?

Your completed response journal for your novel should be done by Friday.

Finish the worksheet on Just Lather.
Choose one of the writing topics:
1. Does the captain deserve to die?
2. Did the barber make the right decision
3. Did the captain do the right thing?
4. Would the barber be a murderer or a hero?

You don't have to do anything with it. Just choose one. Maybe think about it a little.

Silent Reading on Tuesday. You will share your first journal. It doesn't have to be completed.
Lit terms quiz on Tuesdy. Up to characterization.

Final copies of stories are due on Tuesday. Please staple all drafts and editing sheets and hand in.
Bring materials to class for the Creative Box Assignment. You are thinking of yourself in symbolic terms.

Creative Writing
Find another quote about memoir writing that appeals to you. We will post the new ones tomorrow.
Bring your second draft of your place story to class. We will be editing again tomorrow.
Read "What I have lost" Note style and what you have learned about the author from this piece.
Library on Friday to pick a silent reading book. We will be going first thing.

English 12
First draft of your Identities story is due for tomorrow. Final typed copy will be due on Thursday. We will edit in class tomorrow.
Tonight think about a difficult decision that you had to make or someone you know had to make. Did you make the right decision? How might things have turned out if you had done things differently?
Your first journal entry for 1/5 of your novel is due on Tuesday. Remember that you need to be reflective.

Semester 2

Creative Writing
We have been talking about place and about an something that happened in that place.
You will write a draft for Monday. About a page and a half. Try to describe the place and then have the event drive the story.
Remember we are going to the library on February 7th to pick our novel and we are going again on Feb. 14th to set up our blogs.

There is a lit terms quiz on Tuesday. Matching Terms up to atmosphere.
Bring your reading book on Tuesday as well.
I will ask you to write a first response journal for Thursday. I will read it and give you feedback so that you can make changes to your writing before the final copy is due.

For Monday: Read: Identities/consider/irony when reading the story/Do the definitions/just the words/and consider the lit terms/Find: examples of  personification etc.
