We are going to the library to choose an independent novel for reading on Tuesday next week.

Revise your section of the poem. Bring pictures or work together in some fashion to create a unified poem.
Good copy is due on Monday. Some lovely, lovely poems were presented today.
Do the definitions from the story and write them in a sentence related to the story.
Highlight examples of foreshadowing etc (second question) and be prepared to discuss them in class tomorrow.
Lit terms test on Monday. Up to atmosphere. The test will be matching on Monday.

Work on revisions to draft of poem. Good copy is due on Monday. Good beginnings, I can tell. Try to use imagery and metaphor to make your poem richer and more unique.
Look up words from the story The Charmer. Under 5 write sentences with the words. Over 5, provide the definition. We will go over them tomorrow in class. We will come up with a class list of words for the story.

Keep up with your bookclub journals. Remember to include your vocabulary words. Five for each section
Your final journal should be about what you have learned from this book and it should be highly reflective. Try to think about the implications of what you have read. For example, can you think of examples of man's inhumanity to man that exist today? How are they the same or different from what happened in the first or second world wars?  If you read My Sister's Keeper, reflect on the longterm implications of organ donation. When are we going too far to save a life? When should we stop?

Okay, one more weekend to go and then we are done, done, done!
This weekend:
Choose one of the essay topics from the booklet that I handed out on the first or second day of class. Choose a theme and write a narrative. Practice using dialogue if you can. I want you to try writing a story even if that is not what you decide to do on the government exam day.
Book club meeting on Monday. Have your journal done and make sure that you are reflecting on your reading; not just retelling the plotline.
It is your thinking that counts to me. Final journal is due on Friday
There is a lit terms quiz on Monday. The terms go to passive voice.
You can finish the essay that we did in the computer room if you took a copy home. You can also go to the government website and read the questions there.

End of week 2. Four more weeks to go, people. Good work on the essays. Most of you got them together and organized. Let's see how well we can do with the next one.
For Monday:

Write a multi-paragraph essay on the following topic:
Discuss the role(s) that Phoebe and Jane play in Holden's life.
You must have a strong debatable thesis statement. We will edit the essays in class on Monday. I will read them and give you feedback. You will outline one more before the final essay test.

One more day until Friday!

Today:
We worked on our revisions to the essay. Please type the final version and double space it. If you don't have computer access, you can handwrite it in blue or black ink. This should also be double spaced. Please have your papers organized for class tomorrow. I don't want to spend time in class with you looking for your papers. Who will be the student who doesn't have it organized?
 Your good copy will go on the top of the group of papers. You only need to attach 2 rubrics; I only handed out 2 of them.

Do an outline for the Phoebe/Jane writing assignment. You should try to have a  strong thesis statement.

Only 2 more days to go to a sunny weekend! Today we talked about subject and object pronouns.
We did a sheet with questions on them. Do the Applications section of that sheet and write 5 sentences of your own.
Take one of the three paragraph essays we have done this week and revise it. Bring it back to class tomorrow for editing. Check carefully that you have a strong opening and an appropriate conclusion. Do not overuse the same transition words. Put page numbers in brackets like this: (42). Check to make sure that you do not have run-on sentences or sentence fragments. Verify the use of the semicolon and check that you have used it correctly. If you use reflexive pronouns, don't overuse them in your paragraph. They are meant to add emphasis.
The final typed copy will be due on Friday. You must attach all 3 drafts together along with your rubrics, or I will not mark them.
There is a quiz on Chapters 10-12. This involves more writing. Review what you know about the females in this section of the novel.

Today we discussed Ackley and Stradlater. Write a paragraph discussing Ackley and Stradlater and how they are foils for Holden. Cite specific examples. You must use one quotation from the novel. Be sure to have a strong topic sentence and concluding sentence. Use must use an adjective clause in your writing. Underline it.
We will correct and edit in class tomorrow.

Yup, we are on the downward slide. Two weeks to go before exam time. Monday is Commencement. This day will feel strange to you. If you weren't aware that the end was near, this day will hammer it home for you. I will miss seeing you behind the stage. I have been there for as long as I can remember. Be  
proud of how much you have accomplished.

We have reached the climax in the play. Finish the questions for Act 2. We will review Act 3 on Monday and there will be a quiz on Tuesday. Journal: Write about an argument that got out of control. What was that like for you or for someone you know?

English 12
If you haven't sent me your synthesis essay draft, please do so on the weekend. If you don't send it, I won't read it before giving it a final mark.
Finish the questions for Act 2/3 We have watched as far as Hamlet and the play in Act 3. Remember that the climax of the play comes in Act 3. Remember to write a paragraph explaining the "To be or not to be" soliloquy by Hamlet. Pick out 5 important details.

My posts have gotten a little shorter these days. I want to remind you that you are great. You are trying to learn and understand Shakespeare; I admire your efforts. It isn't easy. Hang in there; you will find it easier and easier every day.

Go over Romeo's soliloquy in scene 2 of Act 2. Find 5 literary devices and explain what they say. What do they tell you about how Romeo sees Juliet?
For example,
it is the east and Juliet is the sun: Metaphor/ Juliet is very special; she is as bright as the biggest star and without her, his world would be dark.

I handed out a question sheet today. Pick it up if you were away. Do the questions on Act 1 scenes 1-3
Fill in the new character in your Venn Diagram. Today we met Paris (count/man of wax) who wants to marry Juliet. He would go in the middle of the diagram.
Read the synopsis of the next 2 scenes.
We will be doing love poetry tomorrow and working on how to compare.

Go through Polonius's speech to Laertes/he gives him advice/find 5 and explain them/so, write the line in Shakespeare's language and then explain it in your own words.

I hope that you are all enjoying the break from school and you are finding a way to appreciate the clouds. There is not too much for you to remember for the weekend, but there are a few things.

Bring your second version of your metaphor poem for Tuesday. Good typed version is due on Wednesday.
We will continue with Hamlet on Tuesday and we will do poetry and Hamlet on Wednesday. You will be expected to keep notes on what happens in the play and who the characters are as we go along.

What a great day on Friday! You were absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm and energy with the 1's and 2's.  I know Pam was very appreciative. I will read you the story that she gave me.You could post something on the blog about your experience. If you were away, you could write about missing something and what that feels like.

We are working on phase 3 letters on Tuesday. Bring appropriate writing materials. Don't forget to send your pictures of yourselves. I haven't received any yet. I'm just saying.....
We are going to write letters to the students at Bayridge.
We are going to start work on mystery stories.
Remember that your drafts of your poems are due for Wednesday. I wanted you all to post one of your poems.  You will be reworking your poems on Wednesday and making the best they can be.
You will be putting them into some kind of booklet or something.....be creative....that's why we are here.

Thank you so much for a fine first week! You were simply wonderful to teach.
You have a quiz on poetry terms on Tuesday. Review the worksheets that I gave you on Friday. If you were away on Friday, confirm the correct definitions of the words with your friends.
With Romeo and Juliet, I wanted you to write find the oxymorons in Romeo's conversation with Benvolio.
Note them, but also note what message he is giving by using them. Look at each one individually.
You are to draw 2 cartoons for each scene. On Tuesday, you will be asked to write the quotation that best describes that scene. If you feel ambitious, you can do it on the weekend.

Journal assignment:
Persuasive journal: Write about the value of arranged marriages. Be for them or against them and give reasons to support your opinion OR: Write about a time when you were persuaded to do something that you didn't want to do. How did it feel? What was the result of that choice? Homework check. Not done: in at lunch.


Remember that when you read Shakespeare, you don't have to understand everything.

Good work today. Grade 10's you will get better at reading Shakespeare with more practice and time. You will have to pay close attention in class....That may be tough for some of you.  Creative Writing...it was hard to say good bye to Toy Story. You wrote some good journal entries today. Congrats to all the twelves who were in the Prince of Whales. I understand that it was a fun time. English 12...your pantomimes were great. Jackie...you make an excellent Hamlet!

Tonight:
English 12
think of a theme that is connected to your I am poem. For example, you might think of the theme of being lost or finding your anchor....it doesn't matter.  Write a minimum of 5 lines that relate to that theme. Try to be like Sylvia Plath and have a strong shift in your last line. Bring your draft to class.

Bring your silent reading book for tomorrow. We will begin Hamlet tomorrow. I will tell you the story of the first act and then we will watch in in sections.

So, it's Wednesday and it is still sunny in White Rock. Good, good work today everyone! English 10...you were amazing. Thank you for a good second class. It is fun to have a chance to teach you. Eng. 12 amazing metaphors today! I was so impressed by the fine, fine writing that you were doing. I am looking forward to our visit to the elementary school on Friday, Creative Writing and to your excellent baking!

this weekend

Friday afternoon was a fine tribute to Mr. Mynhardt and all that he has done for Elgin Park. It was touching to see so many students, former students, parents and staff out for this event.

This weekend take a moment to tell your mother how much she means to you. Remember to tell her again next week and weekend too. She will appreciate it.

Enjoy the sun! We can feel summer is just around the corner.

Creative Writing
Perhaps you could write a post about your favorite summer memory. It could be a poem, a story....whatever you like. Post a picture if you have one. Or....write about the music that makes you feel like summer..... Post the video......

On Monday: Bring your next section of letters. Let's try to post them.
I was thinking of building connections with lost people...people from your past that you might want to connect with again...
Some poems are still missing in action. Get them in as quickly as possible please.
Some stories have not been done yet. The same goes for them.

Rewrite your prompt word. Find 3 pieces of lit that match the prompt. Be able to justify why you chose them.
Read the first essay and fill in the sheet that follows it. Note the strengths and weaknesses of the piece. What would you do differently?

Thanks for an energizing class. It was so gratifying to feel all the love in the air. You make my heart skip a beat. I know you know, but I have to keep telling you that you are so unbelievably, earth shatterlingly amazing people. Teaching creative writing is such a gift. Tomorrow we will be writing about archetypes in 1984. We will be sharing our information with the other people in the class and we will be preparing an outline for a paragraph about archetypes in the novel.
You can begin working on your outline tonight. We will write and edit in class and as before, we will work on writing a topic sentence and thesis statement together. You could be thinking about these things tonight. I know how much you love thinking ahead!
